Pet-Proofing Your Plumbing
Taking care of your plumbing system is tough enough without adding mischievous pets into the mix! Even if your pet is well-trained, they may do something surprising that could damage your property. Whether you have a new puppy or a cat that simply tends to get into trouble, we encourage you to pet-proof your plumbing. A few simple steps can save you from a major headache!
The Dangers Pets Pose to Your Plumbing
Typically, plumbing issues are caused by things like routine wear and tear, storms, or cold weather. But pets can actually do more damage to your plumbing than you would think. Pets can drink from your toilet, clog your drains, and chew on pipes, causing pricey repairs. Worse, your pets can cause harm to themselves by drinking from an unsafe water source or getting into plumbing supplies.
At RedFin Plumbing Co., we want to make sure our clients are equipped to prevent common plumbing woes and keep their pets safe at the same time. While we’re always here to help repair your plumbing system, we’re happy when you don’t need pet-related repairs at all!
How to Pet-Proof Your Home
To keep your pets safe and prevent damage to your plumbing, assess your home for hazards and address any you find. The following tips are a great starting point!
- Protect Your Drains – Just like human hair, pet hair can clog your drains. A drain guard can protect your drains from all kinds of hair, including pet hair. All you have to do is to remember to empty the drain guard regularly! But if you’d prefer not to take that step, you can also bathe your pets outside, weather permitting.
- Pet-Proof Your Cabinets – Whether you’re concerned about your pet getting into dangerous cleaning chemicals or you don’t want them chewing on the pipes under your sinks, your cabinets should be no-go zones for pets. Keep your cabinet doors closed all the time and apply child-proof locks for extra peace of mind.
- Close Your Toilet Lid – Keeping your pet’s water dish full of clean water is essential, of course, but they may still be curious about the water in your toilet. If you’re concerned about this, we suggest keeping the toilet lid closed. Toilet water is obviously unsanitary, and it can be dangerous for a pet to consume. Plus, keeping the lid closed will keep cats from knocking items off the bathroom counters or shelves and into the toilet.
- Cover Any Exposed Pipes – Even if your pet is all grown up, they still may be tempted to chew on things! If your dog, cat, or other pet finds and chews on exposed pipes, the result can be dangerous to your pet and expensive to fix. Examine at your pipes and cover any that aren’t currently covered. Don’t forget to look in your backyard if your pets are ever outdoors unsupervised!
Taking a few small steps can prevent you from having to take your dog or cat to the emergency vet and can help you avoid plumbing repairs or replacements.
