A clogged shower drain can be a messy, smelly problem that ranges from a minor annoyance to a major issue. When your shower drain is clogged, your water could back up and drain slowly. Even more worrying, a clogged drain can encourage the growth of bacteria and microorganisms that can be a danger to you and your family. You may notice a smell like rotten eggs emanating from the shower or mold growth surrounding the drain.

While the team at RedFin Plumbing Co. can handle your clogged drain quickly and efficiently, we have another, even easier solution for you: take a few precautions and avoid the clogged drain altogether!

Follow These Clog Prevention Tips

Hair buildup is one of the most common causes of clogged shower drains, but you might find yourself with a clogged drain if you use products with certain ingredients. Follow these tips to prevent your shower from becoming clogged and save yourself time and money.

Purchase a drain cover.

Drain covers are inexpensive and can be placed over your drain to catch stray hair. Just be sure to empty the cover regularly and throw the hair in the garbage. And whenever you clean your shower, don’t forget to give your drain cover a scrub! If you forget to clean the drain cover, your drain will avoid clogs, but you may still end up with mildew and bacteria.

Brush your hair before showering.

Brushing your hair before getting into the shower can get rid of some of the loose hairs before you even start washing it. Leave your hairbrush next to the shower and run it through your hair as the water warms up.

Set aside hair as it comes out.

Whether you’re shampooing, conditioning, or rinsing, you’re bound to encounter loose hair. As you do, place the strands aside on the wall or edge of the tub so they don’t get swept down the drain. After you get out of the shower, be sure to throw them in the garbage.

Flush or clean your drains regularly.

Occasional drain flushes (pouring hot water down the drain) can help keep your drains clear. We don’t recommend harsh chemicals for drain cleaning, as these can damage your plumbing. If your drain looks particularly grimy, a more natural drain cleaning solution is to pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar, followed by boiling water.

Be careful with your hygiene products.

While hair is the most notorious drain-clogging culprit, greasy or oily personal hygiene products can contribute to clogged drains. Avoid using products that contain coconut oil, essential oils, or other oils. These products may be good for your hair and skin, but they can wreak havoc with your plumbing as they build up over time.
